Among the crucial steps in the development of an award winning The North Face snowboard jackets and winter apparel product line is a program of consistent testing in laboratories as well as testing by athletes on expeditions around the world. The North Face has teams of athletes that not only test their product, they also make product improvement and/or new product innovation suggestions that sometimes are beyond the bounds of existing technologies. At The North Face®, there is a Research, Design, and Development team that accepts the input from their athlete teams, who, in turn, turn to laboratory processes and engineering groups to develop either new fabrics, components and/or processes, to turn their teams' ideas and suggestions into The North Face snowboard jackets and winter apparel and gear that helps keep the athlete happy, dry and warm, and that enhances the athlete’s ability to survive and succeed, even in the most severe weather.
Step 1: Research, Testing & Design in Conjunction with a Team of Outdoor Sports Enthusiasts and Athletes
Outdoor sports enthusiasts and athletes constantly push their personal limits and, in turn, help push the engineering and manufacturing teams to the limits of new apparel and gear design and technology. The North Face® Outdoor Athlete Team gives constant feedback on the clothing and equipment they wear and depend on for survival in their outdoor adventures. These teams provide ideas, suggestions, and product evaluations throughout the year.
Step 2: Advance Material Research & Development Teams
The North Face snowboard jackets designers, engineers and manufacturing teams partner with many of the world’s most innovative leading materials engineers and manufacturers to discover and create technology advances to help develop the fabrics needed to manufacture clothing and gear that meets high standards. As an example, The North Face®, along with partner W.L. Gore, created the concept and helped to launch PacLite™, which became the most compressible, lightest weight GORE-TEX® shell fabric available. It weighs only 3.2 ounces per yard, and by adhering this new GORE-TEX® laminate to their proprietary, extremely lightweight nylon substrate, The North Face teams succeeded in creating a shell material perfectly suited for the extreme lightweight requirements demanded in high-altitude expeditions.
Step 3: Innovative Design & Construction
Exploring the frontiers of technology for better fabrics and components is only the beginning of the life cycle of a new piece of gear. A great example of this is the C130 Tent Test. The entire tent line was tested against the competitors by placing them in back of a C130 plane. The plane’s four engines produce 13,000 ft/lbs. of torque and are capable of producing wind speeds in excess of 80 mph and unlike wind-tunnel tests, the propellers can create wind currents that are irregular and multi-directional. The results speak for themselves – the tents outperformed all the competition.
Step 4: Laboratory Tested & Expedition Proven
They save the most critical step in our product development process for last. In addition to subjecting the products to a tortuous battery of laboratory tests, they send the apparel and equipment on extended athlete expeditions to learn how new products perform under the true test of the great outdoors. After receiving feedback, they refine each product until it receives approval from their world-class athlete team.
